Tone Collars, Vibrating Dog Collars, and Shock Collars Review
I’m keeping this review of training collars rather short and to the point. Many reviews have a number of choices but I’ve held this to only one because this training collar does the job well at a good price. Most shock collars come with tone and vibration along with shock. I separated them out in the title because many of us feel uncomfortable with the shock aspect. That’s just fine because you may never need to use it. At least, you have the ability to use it at a very low level. That will depend on how well your pet responds to the vibration and the tone. I have a Golden Retriever who is a great dog. Now and then though she gets distracted by something that is much more important to her than following my commands.
When I’m walking her I like to keep her off leash as much as I can. When I do this I need to know that I have something that will reinforce my commands. I don’t need to use it all the time. Usually she will come or discontinue the bad behavior when I tell her to, but not always. If she comes across an animal such as a squirrel or deer, I need the ability to get her attention.
Setting the Intensity of the Collar
The shock setting should be lowered to a very low level until you find what you need to affect your pup’s behavior. You can find this level fairly quickly if you just pay careful attention to your puppy’s behavior when you put the collar on as well as your dog’s behavior when you press the various buttons on your control. Your pup will tell you when the levels are correct.
How Well Training Collars Work Over Time
The greatest part of the training methods I’m talking about here is the fact that I have not needed any form of training collar for over two years. We walk every morning off leash with mixed behaviors, healing at my side, or freedom to run around. Once you get your dog trained, don’t forget to re-enforce the behavior, if not every day then every other day at least for enough time for the behavior to become habit.
How to Train With the Tone, Vibrate, Shock
I like training collars with 3 choices. An audible beep, a vibration, and a shock. I used my training collar with Nola as a 3 step process. A beep, then if she didn’t behave a vibration, and if she still didn’t behave, a shock.
That said, I have friends who do this a bit differently and it seems to work even better. The tone can be used as positive reinforcement when they do what you want them to do. The vibration is used as a warning and the shock as the final negative. This allows you to give them information more often which adds positively to their behavior.
They Work Like Clicker Training
One really good thing about these collars is that you can send a message to your dog as he’s doing the problem behavior. That works by sending a message that the dog will understand because it is immediate rather than having a time lag between the behavior and the correction. My review of training collars only refers to collars that will do the job of clicker training.
My Favorite is the Patpet collar that has a 3000 foot range.
I have used this collar for about 3 years. It is reliable, long lasting, and has worked like a charm for me. The range is a step above the standard collars by a factor of 3. It is also water resistant so if your dog likes to swim, this won’t stop him. Though I’ve never pushed the buttons while she was in the water, it continued to work just fine after she got out. There was no delay. It worked just as well wet as it did dry.
Also, if you have 2 dogs, you can get a second collar and the remote will handle them both. I felt the cost was quite reasonable compared to the other offerings on the market considering the features and quality.
