Dog Training at Home
Dogs bring love and joy into our homes. That said, they have to be cared for daily. You will have to do lots of training. Take a look at the advice presented above, and you can properly train your dog very quickly.
Always maintain a calm environment as you enter any room your dog occupies. It’s always great to to be playful and upbeat, but a calm environment is ideal when you first enter a room. When you enter the room, ignore excessive agitation on your dog’s part. By ignoring the behavior, you will extinguish it.
Be sure to feed your dog healthy foods and treats. A bad diet can cause your dog many problems. Poor nutrition adversely affects your dog’s health and can cause uncharacteristic behavior. With the right healthy diet, your dog will be more energetic and eager to please during training sessions.
Give your puppy his own toys that he can chew to remove pain due to teething, and keep him away from chewing other items. Immediately replace the object with one of the intended chew toys. If your pup is chewing things he shouldn’t, you need to catch him in the act. Calmly tell him “no”, and replace the item with one of his toys. The important thing here is to keep an eye on his behavior and be sure to catch it when he makes a mistake.
If your puppy is suffering pain from teething, freeze a wet washcloth for him or her to chew on.
It takes lots of repetitions before a dog is able to learn new commands. It is not uncommon for it to take between 25 to 50 repetitions of the same command for your dog to learn it. Keep trying, your dog will pick it up.
To house train your pup, get him on a set feeding and potty schedule every day. Your dog will adjust to the schedule and he will quickly learn that his outside time is when he should go to the bathroom. Sticking to a schedule will teach your dog how to control himself until his next scheduled potty break. You also need to watch him to catch his mistakes. If you catch him calmly tell him “no” and immediately take him outside.
“Leave It!” should be one of the first commands that a puppy learns. This command instructs them to release an object and walk away. This can help stop them from chewing on your belongings and prevents them from ingesting harmful things away from the home.
Your dog needs to understand that ‘no’ means they need to stop what they are doing right away. Find positive and supportive ways to train your furry friend. Saying ‘no’ is not a good command, and the dog won’t know how to react. Not only is each situation different, every breed of dog is also different. Therefore, you should adjust your training based off your dog’s breed and the specific situation at hand.
Avoid your dog’s accidents when potty training. Sometimes, your dog will have triggers for when its that time. Common ones include whining, pacing and even consistent staring. Do not hesitate when you see your dog do that. Get his leash and take him out to his designated toilet spot! Whenever he relieves himself in an appropriate time and place, he should be praised immediately. Eventually, he will learn to ask to go out.
Use the dog’s name as much as you can to make sure he pays attention. Call your dog by name as much as possible when you are first getting to know your pup; this will establish a connection between hearing the name and giving positive attention to the speaker. Keep the name brief, and make sure that it does not sound too similar to other commonly used words. When I give a command, I say my dog’s name first. That way I’ll have his attention when I say the command.
Be sure to reinforce positive behaviors with praise and treats. Don’t dwell on the negative, “no” is usually sufficient. The big thing is to be there giving guidance as much as you possibly can. Your dog needs this. The more time you spend with him, the easier the training becomes. Some of the advice may be a challenge, but it will be worth it.
